Comics are recently coming into scholarly conversation in both formalist and cultural studies in literature. One feature of graphic novel scholarship which has thus far been unaddressed is the creation of sound in comics, and as such, my thesis examines the understanding and interpretation of sound cues within comics. The expressive potential of sound in comics functions beyond the narrative and instead amplifies the theme of a text to the reader. In order to conduct this research, this paper examines secondary works by comics and visual studies scholars such as Scott McCloud, Will Eisner, Gene Kannenberg Jr., and Theirry Groensteen and applies that research to current comic works. My presentation takes the existing theory on comics, as well as other theories regarding art and form, film, color, and semiotics, to examine the sound occurring in the primary comic sources. The primary works examined in this thesis are Chew, by John Layman and Rob Guillory, Safe Area Gorazde by Joe Sacco, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, An Age of Licesnse by Lucy Knisley, and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. By delineating how sound is created in comics, and then comparing that theory to highly expressive examples, this work demonstrates not only the ways in which sound, image, and text all function together, but also how important sound is in understanding the meaning of the comic as a whole.
