Pathways to joy: A case study of the joyful work environment at Tastefully Simple.

This unique case study incorporated the use of interviews, document analysis, physical artifacts, observation, and quantitative analysis. The study was designed to answer two central questions: How is joy transmitted throughout an organization's culture? and What are key components of an organization's culture that business leaders and Organization Development practitioners need to understand in order to promote a sense of joy in the workplace? This was accomplished by looking through the lens of McKinsey's 7-S culture model to review an organization's systems, structure, strategy, staff, skills, style, and shared values.; The sampling strategy incorporated social network analysis in identifying nine individuals who were known as joyful. Self efficacy beliefs of joyful subjects regarding the importance of joy were measured. Each of the nine joyful subjects was interviewed to better understand the dynamics of a joyful work environment along with 11 top leaders to understand leader beliefs and values regarding joy in the workplace. The results were rich descriptions and accounts of the 20 interviewees' perceptions related to joy in the workplace. All results were transcribed and content analyzed using an analytic software analysis program, QSR International's-N6.; Seven major themes emerged from the data collected that contributed to understanding how joy is disseminated throughout this organization's culture. Style and shared values were found to be significant contributors that helped disseminate, support and promote a joyful work environment. Other themes included an emphasis on celebration and recognition; the contagious nature of joy; the catalyst role of joyful individuals; the importance of selecting individuals with a joyful pre-disposition, and the value of communicating key values and principles.; The second research question examined the key components of an organization's culture that business leaders and organization development practitioners must understand to promote and support joy in the workplace. The findings revealed a culture where joy was firmly embedded and endured in the leadership style; shared values; principles, and systems that drive employee behavior. Helping ensure the alignment of people, processes and systems was viewed as critical for business leaders and OD practitioners alike, in promoting and supporting joy in the workplace.
