摘要

There are two protocols that are competing against each other in providing signaling functions for the Internet Protocol Telephony: the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the H.323 protocol. The SIP was designed by the Internet Engineering Task Force in 1998 for setting up sessions between users. The H.323 protocol was designed by the International Telecommunication Union for multimedia communications in the mid 90's. While several comparisons of these two protocols have already been published, a comparison that focuses on qualitative aspects and quantitative aspects of SIP and H.323 is rarely addressed. As a result, this work provides a description of the protocols, the components, and the call setup mechanisms for SIP and H.323. In addition, it provides a comparison for SIP and H.323 based on their qualitative aspects and quantitative aspects and also an explanation for the factors that account for the similarities and the differences between these two protocols.
