The objective of this research is to conduct a comparative study between three seismic analysis methods presented in the International Building Code (Simplified, Equivalent Lateral Force, and Modal Response Spectra) in order to determine if there is any cost savings in conducting a more rigorous analysis than is required. This paper examines full structural designs of three actual structures. Each of these three structures will be designed in three distinct geographical regions based on their seismic activity to give a more general base of information from which to draw conclusions.; The finding of this research is that significant cost savings can be realized by conducting the more rigorous Equivalent Lateral Force procedure for structures allowed to be analyzed by the Simplified procedure. This research also found that there was negligible cost savings by conducting the more rigorous Modal Response Spectra procedure for structures less than five stories allowed to be analyzed by the Equivalent Lateral Force procedure.
