摘要

While Chinese are commonly characterized as "inferior" in European American fiction, exotic or socially determined in Chinese American fiction, Gish Jen, Yan Geling, Ha Jin, and Maureen F. McHugh represent Chinese and Chinese Americans as typical human beings. These writers recreate specific Chinese and Chinese American histories to explore the individual's role in intercultural, interclass, and interpersonal relations. Focusing on the link between individual behavior and social injustices and inequalities, the writer reconceptualizes the significance of individual behavior for social freedom.; In Typical American, Jen accentuates the importance of intellectual independence to personal freedom through the immigrant protagonist's worshipping of America's rugged individualism, an act as detrimental to his life as is American racism. The Chinese American adolescents in Jen's Mona in the Promised Land indiscriminately employ Western philosophies and theories of social reformation to resolve cultural and inter-personal conflicts. But the philosophies and theories are not helpful for their purposes. In Yan's Fu Sang, the mental and physical freedom enjoyed by a Chinese prostitute in San Francisco originates from her primordial mental state that makes her invulnerable to the normalized concepts of femininity and sacrifice. The lifetime inquiry of her European American boyfriend into her moral character leads to his self-knowledge. Ha Jin's characters in the Cultural Revolutionary China lose freedom not in its political supervisions but in their pursuits of the Revolutionary ideology for personal gains. McHugh's Chinese American protagonist, living in the future America as a colony of China, challenges the dominant Chinese ideology by coming to terms with his inferior Chinese American identity.; For these writers, the eradication of racism, imperialism, and totalitarianism depends on individual freedom from systemized ways of thinking and from self-centered and egotistic worldviews.
