Biofuel power generation is receiving significant international attention as a technology from a renewable resource. The use of biofuel requires an examination of the effect of the fuel on engine materials. The effects of the high alkali and low sulfur contents of the fuel on its corrosive properties need to be examined. To determine the extent and the type of corrosion, typical coating systems such as diffusion coatings (DC), overlay coatings (OC), and Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC) were exposed to biofuel combustion products in flame tunnel and furnace environments under conditions designed to promote high-temperature corrosion. The current study is a preliminary examination of the hot corrosion resistance of ten different coatings to biofuel combustion products at three service temperatures typical of an operating gas turbine.; Based on results of the flame tunnel test and furnace test, following coatings are recommended for hot section components of OGT2500 gas turbine: Combustor liner: TBC III, OC I, and the bond coating of TBC I; Stage 1 and stage 2 nozzles: DC I; Stage 1 blade: DC I, DC IV, and DC III.
