摘要

Ellen Langer and her colleagues' research on mindlessness shows that people often overlook change and overestimate the degree of stability in their environments. In relation to health, this may be problematic because variability in bodily processes is central to the body's ability to adapt to environmental stressors. Individuals who fail to notice natural fluctuations in systems may be less able to develop effective strategies for responding to health-related stressors. Research demonstrates that mindful thinking can lead to improved health outcomes; however, there is little empirical information on the effect of mindful attention to bodily processes on the ability to control bodily processes. When individuals think mindfully, they notice distinctions in their environment, continually adjust their views to accommodate new information, and avoid rigid mindsets. In relation to health and bodily processes, an individual who mindfully attends to health and bodily processes would notice the subtle fluctuations that occur naturally in the body. The present study explored the effects of mindful attention to bodily processes in a study of heart rate control. It was expected that attending to the stability versus fluctuation of daily heart rate patterns would impact the ability to control HR. Seventy-five participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions, which differed in the degree to which attention was directed to fluctuations or stability in HR patterns. Each condition group received different instructions for daily monitoring for one week: (1) High Attention to HR Fluctuations group recorded change in HR every three hours during waking hours, (2) Low Attention to HR Fluctuations group recorded change in HR twice daily, (3) Attention to HR Stability group recorded HR upon waking and just before sleep, and (4) No HR Monitoring group monitored daily activities. Results indicated a main effect of attention to fluctuations in HR, whereby participants in the High Attention to HR Fluctuations condition were better able to voluntarily increase their HR than participants in the Attention to Stability condition. These findings support the concept that mindful attention to the fluctuations within a bodily process improves the ability to exert control over that process.
