摘要

Coal mining is a major contributor to the economic development of many countries. However, coal mining across the world has had adverse impacts on physical and human environments. In a bid to reverse the trend of degradation by coal mining operations, various jurisdictions, including Saskatchewan, have promulgated legislation and guidelines which require mine operators to rehabilitate disturbed lands for productive end uses. Firstly, this study assesses rehabilitation practices and identifies the regulations and guidelines which have shaped ecological rehabilitation practices in the Estevan area of Saskatchewan. Secondly, it evaluates the various rehabilitation techniques employed by the mine operator at Bienfait, Boundary Dam and Utility Mines around Estevan and brings to the fore the level of compliance or otherwise to laid down regulations. Thirdly, perceptions of local residents and regulators of Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management (SERM) concerning the outcome of ecological rehabilitation practices in the Estevan area are considered in this study.
