摘要

The Hieratic and the Homely: Philippe Jaccottet's and Elizabeth Bishop's Poetry of Place demonstrates that the postwar French and American poetry of place, represented by the work of Jaccottet and Bishop, recreates a relationship between the lyric self and the external, material world lost to post-Romantic poetry. The dissertation is based on the discovery of two intellectual sources of contemporary poetry: first, Romantic poets' inauguration of the relationship between self and nature as a major subject for all modern poetry secondly, the disintegration of this relationship manifested as a rarefied and recondite Symbolist interiority alienated from the external world. Encumbered by this Symbolist legacy, Jaccottet's and Bishop's poetic paths, which I respectively term the way of transparency and way of opacity, compose a passage from Symbolist alienation, through a willing suspension of interiority and assiduous observation of transient material phenomena, to a reintegration of the inner and outer worlds. Shunning the flight into the abstract or the absolute, this poetic reintegration relies on an appreciation of and participation in the transience, mutability, and inexhaustibility of external phenomena. As a poetry of place founded on an ethics-poetics of observation in the midst of quotidian life, Jaccottet's and Bishop's poetry is committed to the specificity of geographical places and historical circumstances, but it is also a poetry that searches for place, or le lieu, as a center, however provisional, in an age of internalized historical trauma and spiritual void. This poetry locates the true place, or vrai lieu , in a world of the mutable and the possible, not a realm of the permanent and the absolute, in which to observe, meditate, and act.
