摘要

The omnibus production Germany in Autumn (1978 [GiA]) represents a milestone in the history of the New German Cinema. Even though it is regarded as the most important filmic account of the sociopolitical crisis in the Federal Republic of Germany during the autumn of 1977, it is still sadly underresearched. This study provides the first in-depth analysis and interpretation of the film.; Using the employment of social and psychological theories of the Frankfurt School—particularly the work of Erich Fromm on the social charakter—the study demonstrates that GiA must be read as a sociopathographical study of violence. The film explores a variety of events in German history as examples of the origins, the functions, and the aesthetics of violence. It further documents the historical causaltities of political violence and certain analogies between the German past and the present of 1977.; The main emphasis of this study is on Rainer Werner Fassbinder's contribution to GiA. Close readings of various textual passages and analyses of cinematographical devices show that Fassbinder provides an ostensibly autobiographical underpinning to the cooperative production. Through the interaction between Fassbinder's “fictional” and “documentary” scenes his contribution becomes a microcosm of the entire production. The Fassbinder sequence is therefore the key passage for the understanding of the film as a whole.; Fassbinder's deployment of novel and highly self-reflexive filmic strategies results in a reexamination of the aesthetics of the documentary film. Within his contribution, he bridges the gap between the “public” and the “personal” sphere and thus redefines the genre of filmic “documentation”.; All in all, the 26-minute Fassbinder feature must be considered as a culmination point of his oeuvre and as one of the most impressive sociopolitical and aesthetic achievements of the New German Cinema.
