摘要

Although hearing loss affects relationships, no counseling tool currently exists to help audiologists counsel couples about these implications. Therefore the audiologist developed and tested the utility of The Impact of Hearing Loss on Long Term Relationship Scale. This tool's main purpose was to provide a framework for counseling couples about the impact the hearing loss had on their relationship. Veterans in the control and treatment groups completed the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the elderly (HHIE) while their spouses completed the hearing Handicap for the Elderly—Significant Other (HHIE-SO) (Weinstein & Ventry, 1983). The eleven couples in the treatment group completed a 45-minute treatment session using this new tool as a framework for counseling. Three audiologists rated the instrument as having high face validity. Couples in the treatment group also rated the instrument highly. However, statistical analysis using the Wilcoxin matched-pairs signed-rank test showed treatment made no significant difference in either the veterans' perceived handicap after treatment or in closer agreement of the perceived handicap of the treatment group couples. In conclusion, more research is needed to test the efficacy of this scale.
