摘要

This Master's Degree Project proposes a ski design for nordic backcountry environments. The project intends to successfully blend characteristics of both skis and snowshoes into a device that is clear and efficient to use. The design proposed should allow the user to move through deep, unconsolidated snow with utmost efficiency in uphill, flat, and downhill modes.;The boreal/taiga forest regions of the Northern Hemisphere are home to many rural inhabitants who may feel a sense of melancholy and isolation through the long, dark, cold winters. This proposed ski design is an attempt to make the densely treed, rolling terrain more accessible to these populations by offering a device that uses a form of surface tension to allow for movement over an unconsolidated snowpack.;The design uses biomimetics as a means of finding a solution that best represents an evolutionary development in snow trafficability for humans. In using such a technique for the ski's design, an design approach was developed that incorporates many of the criteria found in biological systems.
