The anaerobic biodegradation of high concentrations of perchloroethylene (PCE) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) was investigated. 50 mg/L of PCE and 100 mg/L 1,2-DCA were fed, individually and in mixture, to a series of microcosms, and the degradation processes were monitored. Feeding a mixture of PCE and 1.2-DCA caused a decrease in the transformation rate of both PCE and 1,2-DCA.; A groundwater fate and transport model developed to simulate in situ biodegradation of PCE was tested. The model, which included growth of several metabolic groups in the consortium, was applied to a continuous flow column experiment. A relatively good match was obtained between the model simulations and the experimental data after adjusting the biomass concentrations of acetogens and methanogens, and also altering the reaction rate constants for all the modeled microbial groups.
