This study explores change in two undergraduate courses in ideo-political education: Marxist Theories and Ideology and Morality , in the changing context of China during the 1990s. Through an examination of important aspects of ideo-political education in Chinese universities including administration, curriculum, staff recruitment and training, and building of academic discipline, this study investigates the impact of politics and power on higher education during a period of societal transformation, and the cultural implications of such a process.; There are eight chapters in this thesis. Chapter One raises this issue and justifies the topic.; Chapter Two reviews the relevant literature. It illuminates discrepancies between the fundamental and instrumental levels of Chinese official ideology that became apparent in the early 1980s when the emphasis of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) central work was shifted from “taking class struggle as the principle” to “centering on economic construction with adherence to open and reform policy.”; Chapter Three further classifies and specifies the research questions of this study. It also acknowledges the limitation of this research.; Chapter Four adopts an historical perspective to review the rationale for the major changes in the ideo-political education in universities between the forty years from 1949, when the CCP came into power, to 1989, when Tiananmen Incident happened, which led to a series of sea changes thereafter.; Chapter Five explores the challenges faced by the two undergraduate courses in ideo-political education in the 1990s. The changing attitudes of teachers and students have affected the patron-client interchange of embodiment, protection and reciprocation, which epitomized the relationship between the CCP and teachers, especially those engaged in ideo-political education. Given the change, this longstanding interchange has to operate within a new context.; Chapter Six examines the ways with which the state, ideo-political education, and relevant courses have adjusted to the new requirements of patron-client interchange in the 1990s. It focuses on the status, administration, curriculum, discipline-building, and teacher selection and training for ideo-political education in universities.; By using the experience of one university as an example in Chapter Seven, this study delves deep into the purpose of reform in ideo-political education. It also illustrates the political manoeuvers that were initiated to facilitate change in ideo-political education.; Chapter Eight summaries the main findings of this research. The immediate aim is to strengthen the “legitimacy of the official achievements” through the offering of the two courses in question. The ultimate goal is to maintain a stable political situation.
