Many sources extol the nostalgic virtues of one-room schools during the early part of the twentieth century, but little attention has been paid to the moral teaching that occurred inside these rooms. This dissertation examines character education in the schools of Brighton Township, Macoupin County, Illinois and its effect on the formation of community. Did changes in national and state curriculum concerning character education and morality actually filter down to the rural schools, and what effect did they have on the socialization of the students attending these schools?; Instead of merely examining myths and legends of one room schools, this dissertation concentrates on the learning that occurred in some of the schools in Brighton Township by focusing upon the effects of character education on their communities. Illinois state teaching journals, local newspapers, and other primary sources are used to determine the effect of character education in one rural community. This dissertation shows that one-room school teachers did not operate in a vacuum but acted as one part of a multiinstutitional social structure that reinforced similar or identical themes and ideas in a variety of places. These included, but were not limited to, the home, the school, and the local church. This kind of consistent character education assisted the perpetuation of local mores and attitudes, first in the lives of school children, and then, when they grew up, in the entire community.; Further, rural schools were not isolated from national trends. Immigration, consumerism, economic depression, war, and the growth of nationalism affected the instillation of character and morality in Brighton. By examining the effects of national events, we gain a better understanding of how they effect local communities and the response of such communities to outside influences. Through the investigation of national and state character education curricula and their uses inside Brighton Township's schools, we can understand how ordinary people at the local level internalized the national culture.
