摘要

This dissertation is an historical-rhetorical analysis of one of the most important movements in science today, one with immense cultural interest: the intelligent design movement. The core of the design movement is a network of US professors, which has mushroomed through the writings of its principal rhetors: Michael Denton, Phillip Johnson, Michael Behe, and William Dembski. My purpose is to trace their rhetorical careers and understand the persuasive processes by which design has gained media notice and challenged the intellectual hegemony of Darwinian evolution.; Intelligent design distinguishes itself from traditional creationism, although its critique (“Darwinian macroevolution is based not on empirical evidence, but on philosophical naturalism”) somewhat resembles that of “scientific creationism.” What distinguishes intelligent design is its scientific-argumentative sophistication, its leadership by credentialed scholars at prestigious universities, its separation from Biblical literalism, and its aggressive vision of instigating a Kuhnian “paradigm shift” through relentless onslaught, written and oral, in the universities.; My foundational assumption is that the rise of design is best understood—as a rhetorical phenomenon—by first tracing and analyzing its frame and essence as dramatic and narrative phenomenon. Therefore, as I focus on the four leaders I employ a two-pronged narrative analysis. First, I trace “fantasy themes” which coalesce in a “rhetorical vision.” Second, I deploy an analytical grid of three kinds of “scientific narrative” intrinsically present in all creation-evolution discourses: cosmological, history-of-science, and personal. Within this grid, my primary focus is design's own “movement story.” Thus I have privileged stories about the rise and struggles of the four rhetors, their major texts and the Darwinian response to those texts.; Equally crucial are stories of defenders of Darwinism entering intense social-rhetorical interactions with design, where weaknesses and strengths were exposed on both sides, concessions were made, and situational dialectic led to crucial softenings and repositionings. Such interactions tended to legitimize design's rationality and enabled it to “pry out of the closet” comparative god-terms (especially: “empirical evidence,” “belief in God” and “commitment to naturalism”). This engagement discourse, I suggest, serves as a powerful model for cooperation in polarized arenas where public issues are linked to diametrically opposing worldviews.
