摘要

Enterprise computing systems form a major segment of the intraorganizational sector of electronic commerce. They are concerned with processing knowledge that describes and enables the performance of each value activity in an organization's value chain. Over the past decade, enterprise computing systems have changed the handling of business transactions in many organizations, particularly in the larger ones. What is less clear is the impact (if any) that the systems have on the decision making that drives an organization's performance of value activities. That is, to what extent and in what sense do enterprise systems function as organizational decision support systems (or do they have the potential to do so)?; Current literature does not answer this question. Yet, management needs to know about the decision-support benefits that enterprise computing systems can provide, vendor need to know what decision support characteristics are needed in their future offerings, and for their investigations, researchers need a foundation that clarifies the relationship between enterprise computing and organizational decision support systems. The research proposed here is the first to study the foregoing question and meet these needs. Based on the decision support literature, this research develops attributes for gauging decision-support characteristics and benefits that could be found in enterprise computing systems. These form the basis for an instrument that is used to develop an understanding of the relationship between enterprise computing and organizational decision support. The survey targets adopters of the four leading enterprise system vendors SAP, Peoplesoft, Oracle Applications, and J. D. Edwards.; Given the absence of prior published research about the relationship between enterprise computing and decision support, the current study is of an exploratory nature. Its results will not only illuminate the current state of practice, but serve as an empirical background for hypothesis identification, theory building, software design, practitioner guidance, and instruction. It launches a new research initiative with in the decision support systems field, gives managers a new perspective on the decision-support possibilities of enterprise computing, and highlights areas where vendors may improve the decision-support facets of the enterprise software offerings.
