The main objective of this research is to gain insight into whether or not the principles of ethics and sportsmanship can coexist with the competing principles associated with highly competitive athletic programs in NCAA Division I men's basketball. This study identifies differences in opinions of the major stakeholders---head basketball coaches, student-athletes and the athletic directors---with regard to: (1) the significance of sportsmanship and ethical conduct within the basketball enterprise; (2) a coaches influence on the development of the student-athlete; (3) increased television exposure of men's basketball as a contributing factor in the lack of sportsmanship and unethical conduct; and (4) the governance of ethics and sportsmanship in college basketball.;The study's major findings reveal that there is strong agreement among the individuals responding to the survey instrument on a number of items. Specifically, the panelists agreed that there is a need to respect your fellow competitor and that sportsmanship can be both encouraged and learned. Perhaps, the most revealing observation is that the panelists were in strong agreement that without sportsmanship, the educational value of participation in sport would be sorely compromised. The survey made clear that coaches have more influence on student-athletes than anyone does on campus. A truly significant point was revealed relative to coach's, as they perceive the pressures placed upon them to succeed and to field winning teams. Such measures force them to compromise, they believe, the best long-term interest of the student-athlete. Finally, in their responses, student-athletes and head coaches believe that participation in NCAA Division I men's basketball is "big business" and that such a perception or approach to college athletics contradicts the educational message.;This research resulted in nine recommendations. One of the more critical recommendations is to encourage the chief executive officer of the institution to fully integrate the athletics department into the academic mission of the institution.
