摘要

This thesis examines Walter Benjamin's lifelong fascination with various concepts of play and the type of the gambler. It shows that Benjamin was equally interested in aleatoric forms of play, such as gambling, and in mimetic forms of play, such as children's play, when he started working on the Arcades Project in 1927. In his attempt to analyze the origins of the modern in nineteenth-century Paris, Benjamin established the gambler/player as one of the emblematic figures of the era. Eventually, the gambler was to become as important as the notorious flaneur for the conception of the Arcades Project. For Benjamin, gambling was one of the most significant phenomenona of the nineteenth century. In Paris this became particularly manifest in the Palais-Royal, which is also where the first arcade was built. The thesis shows how the different forms of play, the aleatoric and the mimetic, are closely connected to the history of the arcades and how these forms of play were constitutive to the creation of what Benjamin called the "phantasmagoric context."; Benjamin planned to include a history of gambling in the Arcades Project and it is this history that this thesis will partially reconstruct, partially rewrite. The thesis reconstructs the history of gambling on the basis of Benjamin's own excerpts and rewrites it on the basis of additional research. I examine Benjamin's hypothesis that by the middle of the nineteenth century people's fascination with gambling shifted to the emerging stock market. As I will show, at the same time the public moralist discourse against gambling developed more and more into a discourse against speculation. While these aleatoric forms of play grew more and more popular, theatrical forms of play became an increasingly visible factor in everyday life. Again, the arcades were the urban setting where these forms of play could be practiced and observed. It is in this context, where phantasmagoria established itself as reality, that the player emerged as the proto-type of the modern individual.
