摘要

This dissertation reports on an interpretive study of adolescent interpretations of gender-related material in country music videos and how those interpretations related to their lives. Sixteen teenagers were interviewed in pairs alter they watched eight pre-recorded country western videos chosen for their gender portrayals. This interpretive study is informed by reception analysis and feminism. Observation and peer group interviews are the methods used in this research project.;All participants negotiated meaning in a variety of ways. Most of the males gave preferred readings, while many of the females opposed the male artists' music video texts. While the older boys thought the females in the videos were attractive, women in skimpy clothing and women doing household chores disturbed almost all of the girls. The girls were disturbed by the lower status of women; however, the boys were not concerned. Most of the boys and girls agreed that there was only one strong male role model.;When the participants liked a video, it was usually because they could identify with characters and because they thought the representations of gender were realistic. The females liked the female artists' videos better than the male artists', while the males liked the male artists' videos best.;The participants constructed meanings regarding gender through previous interactions as well as current interactions with the music video text, the other participants and with the researcher. It was found that some country music videos could be a positive force in the adolescents' lives while others offer the adolescents limiting gendered behavior and career options. This study adds to the literature that provides an understanding about the relationships between adolescents, music videos and gender.
