Ontology, by giving an explicit conceptualization, supports the sharing and reuse of formally represented knowledge among Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. This thesis describes a proposed ontology for environmental engineering, and demonstrates how it is implemented using Protege-2000 (Puerta, Edgar, Tu, and Musen 1992). The constructed ontology can become the basis for supporting the construction of knowledge-based systems for the selection of petroleum remediation techniques.; This thesis focuses on ontology construction as a foundation for knowledge representation. It presents the processes of knowledge acquisition, analysis, and representation using a conceptual modeling tool, the Inferential Modeling Technique (IMT), as a basis for ontology construction. In addition, the combination of class hierarchies, entity relationship diagrams, and IMT domain knowledge tables are used for clarifying knowledge. Finally, the clarified knowledge is formulated into the petroleum remediation technique ontologies (PRTO), and implemented using Protege-2000.; The process of petroleum remediation technique selection involves mathematical models and complex decision processes. Therefore, the PRTO ontology library consists of three ontologies: class, process, and relation ontologies. For the purpose of reuse a three-level ontology is designed to facilitate adoption of different domain applications. This approach is illustrated with examples from the implementation of the remediation-selection ontology and the generated knowledge acquisition user interfaces. Further development of the ontology tool is discussed.
