Within an enterprise environment, middleware serves as the foundation on which various business logic objects integrate and communicate. In middleware, business logic objects usually require communication with a database, which may be either remote or local to the application. Within a distributed network environment, the latency of the response from a database to a middleware object that issues a query is affected by four factors: the system on which the middleware object is executing, the network through which the information is sent, the system on which the database management system (DBMS) lies, and the complexity of the request. The Quality of Service (QoS) of the middleware application, therefore, is influenced by the response time and throughput of the query, which are dependent on the load at each of the two hosts, and the network between them.; My thesis, therefore, develops an architecture and framework for monitoring middleware components, particularly when they are accessing databases, to support QoS development.
