摘要

The dissertation research was conducted on Good Work, a microenterprise program in Durham, North Carolina. Microenterprise programs such as Good Work are community-based interventions that target the entrepreneurial skills of low-income individuals as a resource to help them move toward economic independence.;At the time of the study, Good Work provided the following services to its members: business skills training, peer support opportunities, and micro-loans (disbursed using the group or peer lending technique). This research study had three primary objectives: (1) to identify the socio-economic characteristics of Good Work's members; (2) to assess the members' service needs and get feedback on the services offered by Good Work; and (3) to discern and analyze the nature of social support in the peer credit groups.;The study used a cross-sectional design for data collection. This was an exploratory study. Data were collected through personal interviews using a survey questionnaire. The sample size was 58 from a population of 254.;The results indicated that primarily women and minorities were accessing Good Work's services. The income and asset data indicated that the respondents belonged to the working-class population. The biggest barrier for the respondents when starting a business was the lack of business, financial, and marketing skills. Thus, the most important service offered by the program was the business skills training class rather than the business loans. In the peer credit groups, the types of social support most highly valued by the respondents were task appreciation, listening, emotional, and reality confirmation. Social support was rated as more important by women than by men. Social support was rated as "better" by individuals who had participated in peer groups with a specific goal or stake. There was also a positive correlation between perceived "good" social support and perceived benefit to business from peer support activities. The primary practice suggestions made to the program were (1) assist peer credit groups to develop specific task-oriented, skills-based activities as regular features of the small groups meetings; (2) make the loan borrowing process quicker and simpler; (3) perform regular client-needs-analysis to better understand the service needs of the target population.
