The expanding use of information technology within counselor education reflects the rapidly increasing use of technology within the population of the United States. A recent survey of counselor education professionals, however, shows that counselors lack the technology skills to make effective use of technology systems. Additionally, the efficacy of computer-based systems within counseling education and supervision is now beginning to be investigated. The growing field of telehealth, the use of telecommunications to deliver health related services at a distance, includes the provision of mental health services at a distance using video conferencing. Simultaneously, distance learning is an accepted and accelerating education delivery alternative within a majority of U.S. colleges and universities. The intent of this study was to examine the efficacy of video conferencing in comparison to traditional face-to-face counseling in the delivery of distance counselor supervision to counselor supervisees participating in a counseling internship experience. The researcher used qualitative research and a grounded theory approach to data generation. Data were analyzed from two supervisors, from four counselor trainees who were supervised in face-to-face supervision settings, and from four counselor trainees who engaged in supervision only through video conferencing with no face-to-face contact with their supervisors. Two master supervisors supervised two face-to-face and two video conferencing counselor trainees apiece for a 10-week supervision period. Participant journaling and interactive interviews with all participants provided data on the experiential constructs generated by the participants, and data were validated through accepted qualitative research practices. From the investigation, an initial theory was generated that described the supervision experiences and contributed to a clearer understanding of the efficacy of video conferencing as an alternative educational delivery system.
