This thesis describes the design and implementation of Advanced Queuing (AQ) in an aircraft weight and balance system. Oracle introduced the AQ facility with the release of the 8.0 version of its database management system. It provides a pre-packaged method of implementing queuing and messaging techniques.; The Distributed Weight and Balance (DWB) system is an application being developed for United Parcel Service (UPS). The application and database servers are HP 9000 boxes operating under versions 10.20 and 11 of Unix. More than 350 NT clients will be connecting to the server for the data needed to weight and balance all jet aircraft in the UPS transportation network.; The business requirements of the DWB system are very restrictive. In fact, the stringent requirements of this application have limited the number of architectural solutions. The initial design of this application system required continuous polling of the database to discover any new or changed data. Due to the time-sensitive nature of this data, a real-time architecture is required. Therefore, an architecture that simulates an 'email delivery' paradigm using AQ is being proposed. In other words, an AQ agent will monitor the activities of the database and will notify the user of any, new or revised data and will deliver the information (mail) to the user. The techniques used in Oracle's Advance Queuing product offer the ability to meet the required functionality of the Distributed Weight and Balance system and additionally, it provides flexibility for changes in the future.
