The purpose of this study was to identify the attitudes and practices of an active, healthy population of young-old and old-old elderly toward preventive medicine, as well as the differences in preventive medicine attitudes and practices between both groups. The subjects were participants in an cider hostel program who were older than 65 years of age. A questionnaire was administered to determine the preventive medicine attitudes and practices of the young-old and old-old elders. The frequency of each response was tabulated and expressed as a percentage. The frequency of each response was examined separately for each group in order to compare the data obtained for each group. The results showed that the young-old and old-old subjects felt strongly about the positive effects of preventive medicine and that both groups practice many forms of preventive medicine. However, subjects were less positive about patients' willingness to change certain behaviors such as alcohol consumption and smoking due to advice from a health professional. The old-old group was more likely to take part in preventive medicine practices than the young-old group. The positive attitudes towards preventive medicine in this group of healthy elderly indicate that there may be a gap in the perceptions of a health care professional toward the healthy, elderly population.
