Development of domain architectures, patterns and architecture definition languages has been converging over the last few years into complementary activities. Domain architectures develop the basic architecture elements from domain requirements, patterns identify repeatable segments of software architecture and Architecture Definition Languages specify the connectivity of the components in a specification language. These three models can describe significant areas of software design in a comprehensive and concrete way. An area of software that has been a driver for some of this work is aircraft and space avionics systems. Domain architectures had a beginning within the area of DOD systems and discussions on avionics domain architectures was an early part of that activity. This thesis focuses on the development of a domain architecture for Command and Data Handling Systems within an Avionics Domain and the specification of the Domain Model in the Unified Modeling Language. In addition, an initial discussion of the compatibility of UML, ADL and Domain Languages is presented.
