An analysis of the status of the fitness industry.

Despite extensive scientific evidence indicating the importance of regular physical activity, many Americans do not get the recommended amount of exercise and remain, as a result, at risk for related health issues. Fitness facilities appear to be an ideal venue for exercise and recreational activities, yet the industry fails to attract and maintain a significant number of the American population. Investigation into the status of the fitness industry was indicated.;In order to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the industry, a survey of fitness professionals and consumers of exercise programs (N = 494) was conducted. Participants were queried in the arm of business operations, professional development, growth opportunities and consumer influences. Frequency counts and percentile rankings were used to analyze and compare responses of the three sub-groups (managers, instructors and consumers) surveyed.;The principal findings of the investigation indicate that despite apparent success, there are problems that inhibit future growth of the industry. The industry has a distorted self-image---professionals and consumers overrate accomplishments and quickly dismiss inadequacies. The industry lacks standardization and regulation and is, as a result, in a state of disarray. Although three major certification bodies emerged in this study, they hold less than half (41%) of the certification market, leaving industry standards to be determined by everybody and nobody at the same time. The industry is driven by fad and fashion and often is inappropriately influenced by consumer goals. Consumers fail to take responsibility for their own health and well being in and outside of the fitness industry.;Future growth of the industry will require critical analysis by professionals at all levels. A single unadulterated group, or organization of groups, must be developed to create, implement and regulate unified standards for the industry. Educational practices are in severe need of analysis and reform Collaborative efforts of academics and practitioners are recommended. Plans for increased professionalism and standards within fitness facilities must be created to ensure continued development of professionals and growth in the industry.
