This project aims to prompt a discussion of call inspired by its holistic, dynamic and subversive textures in Christian scripture. In doing so it takes up resources from the Christian theological tradition in dialogue with thinkers in French phenomenology in order to construct a theology of call/response that holds a unified meaning while being applied to multiple doctrinal loci. The goal is to elucidate a core concept of call through explication of key doctrines including revelation, creation, vocation and the Trinity, which can also address vexing issues within the theological tradition. In doing so the call and its corresponding response will be seen to be mutually dependent on each other within an overarching structure of dialogue. Similarly, the dialogical relation between theology and phenomenology will be shown to be mutually enriching, as highlighted especially in the phenomenological practice of prayer where the pray-er finds herself captivated by a call to which she responds by means of invocation. The constructive theology of call/response that emerges from this fundamental relation not only brings new meaning to questions concerning vocational call, but carries with it provocative implications for ontology, ethics and trinitarian theology.
