High-temperature solution growth and structural characterization of CeSc3(BO3)4 (CSB) are described. This material is the first example of a stoichiometric scandium borate that exhibits both a wide transparency range and the trigonal, noncentrosymmetric structure of the mineral huntite. Interest in the borate huntites stems from their potential as optical frequency converters and self-frequency doubling lasers.; The crystal structure of NaLiB4O7 and results of its equilibrium interactions with Li2B4O7 are described. Crystal-growth experiments corroborate the peritectic behavior of the compound as well as the existence of intermediate compositions, which may provide a mechanism for tuning linear and nonlinear properties in this noncentrosymmetric crystal.; From an investigation of the Plasma Display Panel (PDP) phosphor Eu:(Y,Gd)BO 3 and development of new EU3+-containing phosphors, a simple model has been formulated for correlating the excitation maxima of BO3 groups with the average cation electronegativity per formula unit. Correlation between site symmetry and the nature of the EU3+ emission, and between structural coordination and the efficiency of energy transfer from the host to the EU3+-activator are made from analysis of excitation and emission spectra.; YMgB5O10 was synthesized during a search for new ternary phases in the system Y2O3-B2O 3-MgO; it provides a rare example of a structure containing a ten-coordinate Y atom. Y4BO7F was discovered during an investigation of the ternary system Y2O3-B2O3-YF 3. Structure analysis and a subsequent synthesis effort led to the development of a new family of borate fluorides Ln4BO7F (Ln = Y, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb.); The new materials Li2Ca6(MO4)F 2 (M = Si, Ge) have been synthesized and structurally characterized, and a convenient synthesis method has been developed for the compound Sr 4Ge2O7F2. Such materials are of interest for the production of highly anisotropic crystal fields and the production of unusual luminescence characteristics.
