Modeling, the process of creating one relational system to represent another, is an important part of scientific exploration, yet relatively little research has been done on this topic. Furthermore, technological advances have led to the rapidly increasing significance of visualization in scientific work. The goal of this research is to explore the cognitive role of visualization in the process of modeling. The practical applications of this exploratory research include enhancing various activities that incorporate modeling with visualization, such as, for example, science and modeling education, software design, and team modeling.; Based on (1) the literature on modeling and mental models, (2) an analysis of sketches done by expert modelers, and (3) historical accounts of experiential descriptions of scientific work, a theoretical framework was postulated for the cognitive role of visualization in modeling. After an initial assessment of the expert modelers' sketches, the framework was modified for use with computer visualization, and a coding system was developed to accompany the framework. The Modeler's Assistant, a modeling tool that provides heuristics visualization and a graphical interface for performing a groundwater modeling task, was developed. The software was used as the domain for an experiment to further assess the theoretical framework and to provide further insight into the process of modeling with visualization.; The contributions of this research include (1) the construction of a theoretical framework for the cognitive role of visualization in modeling, (2) the development of a method to integrate subjective verbal protocol data with objective mouse tracking data, (3) the development of a generalizable method for visualizing modeling heuristics, (4) the design and coding of the Modeler's Assistant software which incorporates this method, and (5) the generation of a rich data set (including video, quantitative and textual data) that can be used for further study in this area. The theoretical framework extends the conceptual mental models work of Johnson-Laird by providing a measurable way to describe the process of modeling with visualization.
