Although ac machines are typically very rugged devices, failure may occur for a variety of reasons and at the most inopportune times. Fortunately, most machine failures are either avoidable with preventive maintenance, or foreseeable with predictive maintenance. In comparison to the costs associated with routine preventive maintenance and on-line condition monitoring, machine failures create disproportionate expenses relating to inconvenience, machine repair and lost production.; Degradation of the machine's insulation causes one prominent type of failure--electrical shorts, or stator turn faults. Simulation and analysis of a model for a turn-faulted induction machine leads to the conclusion that the primary symptom of a turn fault is slight changes in the relative character of the three terminal currents. This observation led to the development of two novel techniques to detect stator turn faults.; The first technique is based on the algebraic sum of the machine's three, calibrated, line-neutral voltages. This voltage sum is band-pass filtered and RMS-averaged to increase sensitivity and facilitate the condition-monitoring task. An increase in this signal's RMS magnitude indicates that the electrical balance of the machine has been altered. This method applies only to machines that are both wye-connected, and permit access to the stator neutral.; The second, alternate technique of turn-fault detection also detects changes in the machine's electrical balance, albeit through the RMS-magnitudes of the machine's three, calibrated, terminal-currents. Standard deviation is used to detect changes in the balance of these three currents. This method applies only for inverter-fed machines.; Both methods of turn-fault detection were verified experimentally with remarkable success by using only basic, developmental implementations. Both methods are sensitive, reliable, fast and particularly well-suited for incorporation in an inverter-drive. These turn-fault detection schemes provide enhanced benefits compared to the prior state-of-the-art in condition monitoring for incipient insulation failure.
