This dissertation argues that literary and cultural texts have both enabled and challenged "financialization", the prioritization of financial values within state, institutional, market, and individual behavior over the past half-century. "Underwritten: Finance Capitalism and US Culture after 1970" finds that finance always appears in writing---notwithstanding its tendency to traffic in numbers---and that literary criticism is therefore uniquely suited to its critique. By highlighting the financialized era's inherent textuality, "Underwritten" contributes to the fields of contemporary literary studies, cultural studies, and economic history, along with the burgeoning subfields of critical and literary finance studies. My chapters explore the ways in which individual financiers and financial institutions within the US rely upon self-representation to safeguard their industry's newfound hegemony. The financial bloc authors literary nonfiction and institutional narratives that scrub systemic inequities from finance capitalism's past in order to deflect present-day calls for reform. Despite popular associations of finance with futurity---its firms, after all, seek to capitalize today on tomorrow's profits---my analysis reveals high finance's heavy investment in its own history. Certain genres of contemporary US literature, including avant-garde language poetry and popular realist novels, respond in turn to finance's sanctioned texts and their attendant discourses. Through its content and form, literature defamiliarizes discursive accounts that frame modern finance as unfathomably complex and abstracted from material reality, and as possessing a dogged ideological hold on the modern subject. The literary genres I examine also call the industry's authorized histories to question. As it interrogates finance capitalism's past, literature encourages audiences to imagine finance's future otherwise.
