The purpose of this study was to determine whether medical malpractice insurance policy limits affect the levels of compensation received in medical malpractice cases. Medical malpractice cases closed between 1988 and 1995 involving a single Florida physician defendant were analyzed. Two thousand four hundred eighty-four (2,484) single defendant physician cases were selected for analysis using a multiple regression model. The dependent variable was the natural logarithm of the inflation-adjusted compensation paid.;Major independent variables in the analysis included medical injury levels, the claimant's age, the place where the injury occurred, and four insurance policy limits.
