art I. Varied successful applications, ranging from high-density explosives to medicinal compounds, clearly indicate that derivatives polycarbocyclic cage compounds possess a bright future. The wide application and promising future of (n) -prismane derivatives has helped to re-focus the attention of the synthetic chemist to devise a more concise, facile, and efficient synthetic route to this exciting, unique class of non-natural products. In particular to this class of compounds, pentaprismane has been recognized for its "synthetic inaccessibility." Thus, it is the goal of this project to develop an efficient synthesis that will not only yield pentaprismane, but that will also easily provide a pathway to the synthesis of pentaprismane's unexplored derivatives (DIAGRAM, TABLE OR GRAPHIC OMITTED...PLEASE SEE DAI).;This interest led us to investigate the tandem 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between munchnone 1 and 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) as a novel facile route to the tetracyclo (6.3.0.0;Part II.
