This study was conducted to determine how the manipulation of cultural variables such as planting date and method of tillage influenced insects associated with field corn, Zea mays (L.), production systems in North Central Mississippi in 1996-97. An in-furrow insecticide application was added to each treatment for comparison. Insects found in great enough numbers for analysis included seedcorn maggot, Delia platura (Meigan); corn flea beetle, Chaetocnema pulicaria Melsheimer; chinch bug, Blissus leucopterous leucopterous (Say); corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie); fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith); insidious flower bug, Orius insidiosus (Say); lady beetles; and spiders.; Seedcorn maggot larvae and corn flea beetle adults were most influenced by planting date and tillage. Both insects were found more frequently on corn in earlier planting dates when compared to later planting dates. Both insects were also found more frequently when plots were hipped in fall and rehipped in spring prior to planting (this system turned under nearly all organic matter on the soil surface) when compared with plots hipped in fall and planted in spring without rehipping (this system left greater than 30% ground cover on the soil surface). Chinch bugs were more numerous on corn in early planting date treatments compared with later planting date treatments in the non-insecticide treatment plots until late in the season, at which time the second generation adults moved to the latest planted corn. Significantly more chinch bugs were found in plots hipped in fall and rehipped in spring. Corn earworm, fall armyworm, insidious flower bug, lady beetles, and spiders were influenced most by planting date. All were found in greater numbers in later corn plantings except the corn earworm, which was found in greater numbers in earlier plantings. There were no significant differences in yield among treatments.
