Ordinal data are categorical values that have a particular order, but the distances between the categories are not defined. Such data are common in studies where subjective assessments of a phenomenon are recorded. Statistical methods to analyze ordinal-valued outcomes, however, are not well developed especially in the case of serially dependent time series.;Statistical models for analysis of ordinal-valued data are studied as well as techniques to assess the models' goodness-of-fits. Models used are extensions of generalized linear and state-space models, both shaped for the particular characteristics of ordinal-valued outcomes. A study of tree flower phenology from a tropical wet forest in Costa Rica, during which observed flower intensities were recorded by biologists as either "none", "some" or "much", motivated the research and is a focal point of attention.
