摘要

In this study, I describe the social changes which Ukraine has experienced in recent years and their impact on educational leaders. To understand this, I analyzed leadership patterns in Ukrainian history and the leadership of two women today; a senior executive in a government university created in the Soviet era and the director of a for-profit school of business English that started since perestroika. Interviews and/or observations were done with the subordinates which made up their respective networks.;I conclude that recent social changes in Ukraine have created a tension between the legacy of authoritarian, communistic leadership and the flexibility needed to cope with the uncertainties of society today. Americans working in Ukraine should understand how patterns of leadership have changed, be aware that cultural differences exist, and realize that local concepts of effective teaching differ from their own.
