The Well-Tempered Clavier of J. S. Bach and the Mikrokosmos of Bela Bartok are the largest sets of pedagogically-inspired works to be found in the keyboard literature. Both the Mikrokosmos and the Well-Tempered Clavier, were composed for Bach and Bartok's nine-year old sons for the purpose of teaching them keyboard technique and musicianship. Bartok arranged the Mikrokosmos in order of increasing difficulty and also provided specific performance indications with regard to tempi, dynamics, articulation, fingering and pedal markings, including preparatory exercises. The pieces in the Well-Tempered Clavier, on the other hand, are arranged by key, proceeding from C major in ascending semitones rather than progressing according to difficulty. Interpretive indications are rarely included. The purpose of this dissertation, therefore, is to arrange the forty-eight preludes and fugues in order of ascending difficulty, providing performance suggestions which would assist the student in the learning process.;In this edition, the forty-eight preludes and fugues are divided into six different levels of difficulty, encompassing the easiest level to the most advanced. Twelve selected preludes and fugues: C;Rather than separating and synopticlly categorizing each elements of discussion under such umbrella as that of tempi, articulation, fingering, hand distribution, ornaments, dynamics and preparatory exercises, this dissertation will examine musical and technical difficulties as they unfold themselves within each composition. In each chapter, the twelve preludes and fugues are investigated beginning with general interpretive ideas and progressing to more specific points on some technical aspect. In this pedagogical context, this dissertation may be viewed as a written-out lesson for the piano student and the piano teacher.
