Today, technology for telecommunications is rapidly advancing toward a common goal of procuring a universal infrastructure for ubiquitous multimedia communications. Currently, a variety of communication systems handles a diverse array of information exchanges. Satellite links, cable-based Ethernet, cable television (CATV), public branch exchanges (PBX), and cellular networks are just some of the many services which are available today. The goal of tomorrow's information system is to integrate all the wireline transactions in fiber-based Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) giga-bit networks, while wireless communications are evolving under the auspices of Personal Communications Systems (PCS). In both systems, the technological challenge in system integration becomes enormous, especially in wireless communications where the device must be small and low power for portability and be able to support high bit rate for high fidelity multi-media communications. Leveraging the advances in very large scale integration (VLSI), complex high performance systems are being integrated into integrated circuits (IC) which fit in a single chip.;This dissertation describes the design and implementation of a single-chip all-digital intermediate frequency (IF) binary phase shift keying (BPSK) direct sequence (DS) spread spectrum transceiver used for wireless multimedia networks.
