摘要

This dissertation investigates Paul's use in 1 Corinthians of a part-whole rhetoric of "the common advantage" (to sympheron). A part-whole rhetoric is a traditional Greco-Roman ethical discourse in which the community is the context of ethical reasoning, and members seek the advantage of the whole. Paul employs the ethic of to sympheron to combat the improper exercise of to idion (private advantage) and to advance his ministry by overcoming socio-economic, ethnic, and gender differences that threaten his ekklesiai (churches).;Although classical and Pauline scholars have taken notice of to sympheron, its contexts and functions remain insufficiently mapped. Chapters 1 to 4, therefore, demonstrate from Greco-Roman writings that to sympheron is rooted in part-whole relationship ethics. In such contexts, to sympheron becomes a criterion for addressing issues such as conduct, division, and conflict. The dissertation probes the complex relationship between to sympheron, to idion (private advantage), and to dikaion (justice) more deeply than prior scholarship. To ease tensions between them, early moral philosophers sometimes invoked a rhetoric of the human body. Philosophers observed hierarchy in the human body, in the universe, and in social structures. When hierarchical dynamics are abused---such as private advantage overriding common advantage---discord and injustice result. For Paul, however, the body should operate organically, without tension between to idion and to sympheron. Thus the body metaphor promotes community reciprocity and demonstrates the mutual benefit of working for the whole.;Chapters 5 and 6 argue that Paul's use of to sympheron in 1 Corinthians is consistent with Greco-Roman usage in certain particulars. Yet in Paul's paradigm the community is not simply a body, but "the body of Christ." Paul uses the Cross and agape (love) as alternative and powerful ways to understand and express an ethic of seeking the good of the community. Paul further develops the advantage ("salvation") of the gospel that overcomes previously-existing social divisions toward a community of "called ones." Paul's goal for to sympheron is not simply concord among Corinthian believers but also taking the gospel beyond them, for he believes many will gravitate to communities rooted in the ethic of to sympheron.
