The Happel-Kuwabara cell model, which was used exclusively for circular fibers, has been extended to fibers of an arbitrary cross-sectional shape. By forcing the truncated general solution of biharmonic equation ;The above method has been applied to rectangular fibers. Simple analytical formula for dimensionless drag at zeroth order approximation is derived. In cases where zeroth order approximation does not provide satisfactory accuracy, higher orders of approximations are used. Comparison with previous numerical results shows good agreement. In addition, filter efficiency due to interception for rectangular fibers and dimensionless drag for "+" shaped fibers are calculated.;The solution method has also been applied to a staggered array of fibers where the outer boundary is noncircular. It is found that Happel-Kuwabara cell model can be considered as a zeroth order approximation of the truncated solution, and the error at the outer boundary is not minimized unless the cell radius and the undisturbed velocity take different values.;To test filters for high efficiency and general purpose cleaning, an automated filter test system has been built for measuring the filter efficiency and pressure drop. The possible errors and uncertainties in filter efficiency measurement are minimized. Pressure drop and particle penetration data for seven industrial filter media have been obtained.;As a criterion to compare different filters, figure of merit has been studied qualitatively. Using two dimensional filtration theories, the figure of merit is shown to have a minimum at certain fiber diameter, and fibers larger or smaller would provide better performance. It is found that from both theory and experiment, the roles of good filter and bad filter may change when operating condition changes, and filters made of fine fibers does not always outperform those made of coarse ones.
