Since the 1970s there have been various discussions of irony in Romantic literature by critics such as Tilottama Rajan, Stuart Sperry, Anne Mellor, David Simpson, and Lilian Furst. This thesis was inspired by these works on Romantic irony, but it is an attempt to address unanswered questions about the specific role of irony in poetry: how irony arises and how it affects a poem. Specifically, I examine the possibility that philosophical irony may be produced without a clear "ironist" governing the meaning of the discourse. According to my analysis, Romantic irony often results from the process of writing itself: poets who explore elusive subjects such as the ideal or the sublime find that their questions cannot be answered and their arguments lead to uncertainty, ambiguity, or contradiction. The irony arising in such a poem consequently affects the poetic structure because it hinders a closure that the poet might otherwise have desired. Much "openness" in Romantic poetry, I argue, results from the unresolvable contradictions of Romantic irony, and I find Romantic irony a fundamental concept not only for poets such as Keats and Shelley, but also for Wordsworth and Coleridge. My study examines lyric poems by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats and Shelley and outlines three broad categories of endings: substitute closure, acknowledged indeterminacy, and deliberate openness.
