摘要

This dissertation examines the cultural and intellectual world of the French Ursulines during the Catholic Reformation. As teachers, catechizers and missionaries, Ursulines were critical agents of religious reform and marked out new territory for women. As writers, Ursulines manipulated traditional religious and gender imagery and stereotypes about women to construct a unified identity and history for the order, to articulate an activist spiritual ideal, and to fashion a new role for women--the female apostle.;The early uncloistered congregees challenged the boundary between the lay and religious lives and the Church's prohibition of women teaching in public. Even after enclosure Ursuline nuns continued to expand their apostolate. They exploited the ambiguities between teaching and preaching to claim some of the functions and authority of male clerical office. They developed an ideal of spiritual motherhood that included both married women and nuns and contrasted sharply to the polarity set up in the Middle Ages between biological and spiritual motherhood. Ursuline historians rewrote conventional religious history to create a tradition of female apostolic activity that stretched from the Old Testament to their own time.;Ursulines also contributed to the seventeenth-century debate about eloquence and sacred rhetoric. They developed their own models of speech that drew on the precedent of medieval women mystics and on contemporary discussions about preaching. Ursuline writers used images of fertility and maternity to create a specifically feminine model of eloquence that helped to justify their appropriation of the traditionally male role of teacher of the word of God. By shifting the focus of the history of eloquence and rhetoric from intellectual debates, from which women were normally barred, to ordinary practitioners, we can begin to discern the place of women in the "age of eloquence.";The activities and writings of the French Ursulines were critical to the creation of an active female apostolate and the expansion of women's roles in the Church during the seventeenth century. Through their contribution to female education and the growth of laywomen's spirituality, Ursulines both transmitted and shaped the Catholic Reformation.
