摘要

This study focuses on Wicca or Witchcraft or the "Craft" in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the last twenty-five years, Wicca and the larger Neo-Pagan religious movement, of which Wicca is one part, have drawn an increasing number of people in the United States to participate in alternative religious practice. This research looks at some of the reasons why Witches participate in this alternative religious practice. It explores those attributes of Wicca that make it so compelling to people that they are willing to practice as Witches in the face of considerable misunderstanding from the larger culture about who they are and what they do.;In the conclusions, drawing on the data from the fieldwork, the interviews and some authors in the psychology of religion, a psychological interpretation is made. It looks at the ways in which particular attributes of the creative, religious practice of Wicca provide psychological support and personally meaningful experience for the participants of the tradition.;Drawing on two years of participant-observation fieldwork in the community, the study provides a detailed ethnography of Wicca in the Bay Area. It also analyzes some of the material from twenty-five in depth interviews (with both women and men) on various themes: the definition and use of magic, the relationship of participants to Goddess(es) and God(s), and the question "Why are you a Witch?" This analysis uses liberal quotes from participants to describe and convey the Wiccan worldview. Some commentary on the nature of a "conversion experience" is made.
