A rapid-reaction technique with a 10 ms time resolution was developed to measure glycine receptor responses from cultured embryonic mouse spinal cord cells. This method may also be used to study many different neurotransmitter receptor responses from cultured mammalian brain or spinal cord cells. I employed a chemical-kinetic approach to show that there are two forms of glycine receptors expressed on these cells. One form desensitizes rapidly, is sensitive to strychnine, has three glycine-binding sites, is associated with a 48 pS conductance channel, and is sensitive to picrotoxinin.
