This thesis describes the design and analysis of a microcontroller-based dc motor speed control system. The dc motor was supplied by a two-quadrant chopper. The gating pulses for the chopper were delivered directly by the microcontroller. The cascaded speed and current loop configuration was used in this application. The main area of study is the use of the MC68332 microcontroller's powerful on-chip resources and their integration for the given application.;The problems associated with the speed control system are discussed, and efficient solutions have been proposed. Finally, the theoretical work presented in the thesis was experimentally verified.;The MC68332 microcontroller is well suited for this application because it offers attractive advantages in performance, price, flexibility, reliability and power requirements. The available timing functions on the MC68332's Time Processor Unit (TPU) were used to generate gating pulses for the chopper, process the pulses from the shaft encoder for speed evaluation, generate interrupts required by the system software. The Central Processor Unit (CPU) of the MC68332 was used to calculate the PI regulator and gating pulse parameters, calculate the motor speed. The Queued Serial Module (QSM) of the MC68332 was used to provide serial input/output data transfers. The System Integration Module (SIM) of the MC68332 was used to control the microcontroller unit (MCU) system start-up.
