This work discusses the syntax and semantics of post-verbal subjects within a theoretical framework that combines the Principles and Parameters approach to syntax with functional considerations. The analysis is based on a comparison of Italian and Northern Italian dialects. In particular, new data from the dialect of Conegliano, spoken in an area north of Venice, will be introduced.;The central claim of this work is that post-verbal subjects in Italian/Conegliano are not obtained by a process of inversion from pre-verbal position which adjoins them to the VP, but are based-generated post-verbally, inside VP. Using adverbs and secondary predicates as delimiters of the VP right boundary, we argue that the subject of transitive verbs is generated adjoined to the ;In our analysis, a subject that appears post-verbally at S-structure is either dislocated or in its D-structure position, but it cannot be VP-adjoined. This entails that the analysis of the Definiteness Effect proposed in Belletti (1988), which makes use of the VP-adjunction mechanism, cannot be maintained. An alternative solution to the Definiteness Effect will be proposed.;After investigating the conditions under which subjects of monadic and transitive verbs remain inside VP at S-structure, we conclude that subjects need not move (thus under the economy approach adopted here, they cannot move), as long as some interpretative conditions are satisfied.
