The purpose of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate a participatory action research process within the leisure sciences. The development of the specific participatory action research process used in the study was guided by local theory. Specifically, the study sought to develop and prioritize a list of emerging social science issues within the Midwest Region National Park System and to develop and begin the implementation of action plans designed to address some of those issues identified.;The participatory action research process developed attempted to incorporate full, or codeterminative, participation. The process was comprised of four stages: (1) a review of five separate planning documents for 28 park units within the region; (2) research planning meetings held with an Advisory Group comprised of six Midwest Region employees; (3) a three round modified Delphi survey of 300 full time permanent Midwest Region employees; (4) a workshop/conference tied to the highest rated issue determined through the Delphi process. The study was an initial test of the participatory action research process within the leisure science field.;Evaluation of the study was based upon the production of specific outcomes: participation, knowledge, consensus, and action. An evaluation questionnaire was completed by all participants of the workshop/conference and a random sample of 30 Delphi participants.;Evaluation of the process indicates that the process incorporated full participation. Evaluation also indicates that the process was successful in developing knowledge and producing some consensus concerning that knowledge, and was at least somewhat successful in developing and beginning to implement action plans based on that knowledge gained.
