A seemingly endless amount of cultural differences exists between Japan and the United States. These differences can have a negative affect on relations between the two countries. By understanding those differences we can make them mutually beneficial for successful economic, political, and social relationships. To understand the Japanese it is necessary to understand the major influences of religions on their culture. Japanese religions such as Shintoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism dictate traditions and actions of the Japanese people. Similarly, Japanese society today has been shaped by the evolution of nationalistic forces. Finally, we must understand cultural and social differences to make interaction as smooth and productive as possible in all relations between Japan and the United States.
